IMAGES FROM THE SMUDGES
Greenpoint on October 11th!
We started on the shores of Newtown Creek and next to the BP gasoline depot for NYC. We cleansed the neighborhood with a hefty dose of smudging and created a bit of a spectacle in the process with a march down Nassau. Then we sat in McGolrick Park and ate amazing cookies (thanks Hannah!) on perhaps the last warm sunny day in 2008.
Gowanus Canal on October 18th
Canoes, mumus, oysters and sage! We hauled the smudge down to the Gowanus Canal where the excellent Gowanus Dredgers Club was having their Oktoberfest celebration. It was a great day with a serious smoke-out of bad vibes, canoe rides, cookies, and Rudy Shepherd's bad energy absorbing sculptures. Thanks to Leah for donning the sacred caftan of smudging.
West Village on October 25th
Something queer was happening on the Pier! We rolled down Christopher Street, smudge a-smoking, to help dissipate bad energy in a queer space due to gentrification as well as external and internal issues affecting the queer community. We ended at the Stonewall Inn with readings of historic homo-texts by Melissa Anderson, Geoff Hendricks, Robert Marshall and Emily Roysdon. Then, dj Holli Smith rocked the gay haus jamz!
Federal Hall on November 3rd (day before the election!!)
We burned it up at Federal Hall! The site of George Washington's inauguration as the first President, Federal Hall is a symbol of the United States' political history. This smudging happened the day before the 2008 presidential election, an event that has stirred strong emotions/anxieties about the nation's future. Federal Hall is also located on Wall Street, the symbol of international economic control. This event sought to smudge away the bad energy associated with U.S. economic imperialism and current financial anxieties.
The event was greatly enhanced by readings delivered by Abbey Williams (FDR's inaugural address in 1933) and Sally Oleson Kirsher, my ma, (Proclamation of Independence). The event was also greatly enhanced by the interpretive dance moves of very special guests Rebecca Brooks, Layla Childs, Anne Hall, Emily Roysdon, Colin Stilwell and Sarah White and tarot card readings into our national future by Shelley Marlow, aka George Washington.
The next day was a dream come true!
